Car

Covering over 840 square miles, Jacksonville occupies more land than any other U.S. city. While public mass transit is better than average, getting around is best done by car. In the downtown area, Main Street is (with some exceptions) the dividing line between streets designated east and west; Bay Street divides streets designated north and south. Interstates 10 and 95 intersect in the heart of the city, and I-295 provides a convenient loop through the city's west side.

As the city straddles a large river and the street layout can be confusing, be sure to take a map with you when driving. You'll find most major car rental agencies represented at the airport and elsewhere in the city.

Public Transport

Light Rail: The 2.5-mile Skyway Express system takes passengers around the central business district. Fare is $0.35.

Bus: Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) offers bus service throughout the city. Routes radiate out from a large depot downtown. Basic fare is $0.75 for one-way rides north, south, and west originating downtown; express routes are $1.35 or $1.50 one-way; beach routes cost $1.35 one-way. Exact change is required and JTA does not provide transfers. For more information, call 904-630-3100.

Taxi: Rates aren't set by the city and they vary; a typical fare includes a $1.50 drop charge plus $1.65 per mile. Companies include Gator City Taxi (904-355-8294), Yellow (904-260-1111), and Checker (904-765-9999). While it isn't impossible to hail a cab in the street, drivers are not compelled to stop for pedestrians except at cab stands located at several downtown hotels, the Greyhound station, and at the riverfront.

Water Taxi: Water taxis provide transit between tourist destinations on the north and south banks of the St. Johns River. (904-730-8685)

Airport

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)

Jacksonville International Airport (JIA) is just 20 minutes north of downtown on I-95.

Transportation from the airport to downtown Jacksonville:

Many hotels provide courtesy rides for their guests; be sure to see if your hotel offers this service. Taxi fares are approximately $23 from the airport to the downtown area, and between $45 and $50 from the airport to the beach area. Gator City Taxi also provides shuttle service, but only for five or more passengers; cost varies by destination.
