The town of Marathon runs two public beaches on its Atlantic Ocean side. The clear, shallow water allows for excellent snorkeling. At the sandy shorelines visitors can find starfish and lobster buoys tossed up by the ocean. Beachgoers also sunbathe and swim; the bottom is sandy for a long way out. This is a sportfishing enthusiast's paradise, with some 600 species of fish that can be taken by rod and reel.Tourist season is January through April; temperatures range from the mid-70s to mid-80s. Picnic tables, restrooms, and showers; hotels offer equipment rental, snorkeling tours. Visit the Crane Port Children's Museum and the Dolphin Research Center.
