Ocala is the center of Florida's Thoroughbred horse breeding and training country, and there are more than 500 Thoroughbred farms in the area, several open to the public. Silver Springs, one of the state's top attractions, is located here (see separate listing). Visit the Appleton Museum of Art, Ocala Jai Alai, the downtown historic district, and nearby Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. Ocala National Forest has several developed recreation areas. The largest, Salt Springs, offers swimming, camping, hiking, and boat rentals.
