The main artery through Orlando is Interstate 4, which runs east-west through Florida, linking the Atlantic coast with the Gulf coast. In Orlando, however, the highway travels mostly north-south, which can be confusing. Keep in mind that east = north and west = south (on I-4 in Orlando, at least). Driving near major attractions or along International Drive (a local strip of motels and eateries) can get very congested. Most hotels can arrange inexpensive transportation to the theme parks; if your aim is sightseeing and not business, this is probably your best option.

Bus: LYNX (407-841-LYNX), the transit system that serves the Orlando metropolitan area, provides several economical transportation options. LYNX standard fare is $1. LYNX Lymmo serves the downtown area, providing no-charge transportation throughout the area Monday through Thursday from 6 AM to 10 PM, to midnight on Friday, and weekends from 10 AM to midnight. I-Ride trolleys provide convenient service along International Drive daily between 8 AM and 10:30 PM for $1 (free for children 12 and under when accompanied by an adult). Local weekday LYNX service runs between 5 AM and 12:15 AM; service varies on weekends according to route. Taxi: Although some cab drivers may pick up persons who hail them from the curb, your best bet is to call for dispatch. Expect to pay between $3.50 for the first mile and $2 for each subsequent mile. Most companies allow up to five passengers to split the fare. Yellow Cab is at 407-699-9999.

Orlando International Airport (MCO)
Orlando International Airport (MCO) lies about 12 miles southeast of Orlando. When traffic is flowing, expect a 15-minute ride to reach the downtown area. If your destination is near Walt Disney World, allow about a half-hour in good traffic. Transportation from the airport to Orlando destinations: Check with your hotel before grabbing a bus, shuttle, or taxi; many local hotels, motels, and resorts offer transportation from the airport to their doors.Public Transit: LYNX (407-841-LYNX (5969)) buses can be boarded at Commercial Lane spaces B12-B14, Level 1, on the B side of the terminal building. Depending on the time of day and the day of the week, buses run every half-hour to every hour, and it takes about 40 minutes to make the trip to the downtown bus terminal on Pine Street. Fare is the LYNX standard charge of $1.50; keep in mind, however, that no large luggage is permitted. You are limited to what you can carry on your lap. If your destination is Walt Disney World or one of the International Drive motels and you're looking for an economical way to get there, you're better off taking a shuttle van or sharing a taxi. Shuttle: Several van and limousine companies offer service to and from Orlando International Airport. Mears Transportation Group (407-423-5566) boards passengers on Level 2 outside the baggage claim areas on both A and B sides of the terminal. Fares vary depending on your destination. Taxi: Taxi stands are located on Level 2 outside the baggage claim areas on both A and B sides of the terminal. Cabs can carry up to eight passengers; generally up to five can share the cost of a ride. Expect to pay about $30 for destinations downtown or on International Drive. Fare to Walt Disney World and environs can set you back as much as $45. While this seems steep, keep in mind that, with five people sharing a cab, cost per person may be less than that of a shuttle van.
