Founded by the Spanish in 1565 and the oldest European settlement in the United States, St. Augustine is a resort city with a patina of history. The Old St. Augustine Restoration has revived the Spanish Colonial section where historic homes and craft shops may be visited. Among the most fascinating of the Spanish-period structures are the Castillo de San Marcos, the Basilica Cathedral of St. Augustine, the Mission of Nombre de Dios, and the Oldest House. The Colonial Spanish Quarter is a re-creation of an 18th-century Spanish Colonial village consisting of several restored and reconstructed houses. There is also a variety of craft shops in the area. The Lightner Museum displays antiques. Also visit the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park and the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum. The Castillo de San Marcos, now a national monument, is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. South of the city on Anastasia Island is the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, with Florida wildlife shows, a zoo, and a museum.
