This Gulf Coast city is famous for its sponge industry, which attracted thousands of Greek sponge divers and their families. The colorful Hellenic influence is still strong. Stroll along Dodecanese Boulevard on the waterfront, and you see on one side sponge boats decorated with Greek designs and on the other, stacks of sponges, curio shops, and restaurants. The Spongeorama Exhibit Center tells the story of sponge diving. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral boasts an interior of sculptured Greek marble and stained-glass windows. Also see the historic district and Konger Tarpon Springs Aquarium.
