Founded in 1836 and named for the capital of New York, Albany is a commercial and cultural center for the pecan- and peanut-farming area of southwest Georgia. At Thronateeska Heritage Center, you'll find the Museum of History and Science, with model trains, Indian artifacts, and other displays of local and natural history, and the Wetherbee Planetarium. The Albany Museum of Art offers traveling exhibitions and displays from the permanent collection of American, European, and African art. Animals of the African plains roam in natural settings at the 293-acre Chehaw Wild Animal Park. The zoo is adjacent to Chehaw Park which also offers a scenic train ride, camping, nature trails, and picnicking.
