In 1864, this village of only 20 people became the site and supply depot for the notorious Confederate prison where 13,000 Union soldiers were to die of malnutrition, exposure, and disease. Today, the Andersonville Civil War Village recreates a typical village of the period with a pioneer farm and log church. The village includes the Drummer Boy Civil War Museum. Nearby, the Andersonville National Historic Site includes the partially reconstructed prison and the National Cemetery where the dead are buried. The National Prisoner of War Museum, opened in 1998, contains moving exhibits and personal accounts of Americans who have suffered confinement for their country in all wars.
