Renting a car is strongly advised. Traveling by car is the only way to see many parts of Atlanta not accessible by public transportation. Be aware, however, that drivers in Atlanta drive faster than anywhere in the south. Also, you can expect delays at rush hour. If you hear a reference to "the perimeter," that means the beltway formed by Interstate 285. Greater Atlanta is everything inside the perimeter. Everything else is outside the perimeter. Downtown a lot of streets are called Peachtree. There is more than one place where Peachtree intersects Peachtree. To sort out the confusion, get a detailed map and ask for specific directions.

Atlanta Rapid Transit Map
Subway/Bus:The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) system is reliable and very safe, but it probably won't take you everywhere you want to go. There are two main lines: the Orange Line runs north-south and the Blue Line runs east-west. They intersect downtown at Five Points station. Trains run every four to eight minutes on weekdays, every ten minutes on Saturday and weekday evenings, and every 15 minutes on Sunday. Operating hours are 5 AM to 1 AM daily. The fare is $1.75. NOTE: All cash fares must be in exact change. You can get a roll of 20 tokens for $30 or a TransCard for $13, good for unlimited rides for a week. Transfers are free, but you must ask the driver or push a specified button on the subway turnstile to receive one. For route and schedule information, call 404-848-4711. Taxi:Taxis must be ordered by phone. Atlanta taxi drivers are seldom very knowledgeable about their city. If you need to get somewhere off the beaten track, bring directions. Also, many drivers do not carry sufficient change, though many accept credit cards. Fares begin at $2 for the first mile and $0.25 for each additional 1/7 mile, except inside the downtown convention and business district where the fare is a flat fee of $5 (plus $1 for each additional person). Major companies include Atlanta Royal Cabbies (404-584-6655), Buckhead Safety Cab (404-233-1152), Checker Cab (404-351-1111), Ealy Taxi (404-223-6000), and Yellow Cab (404-521-0200).

The MARTA station is located on the west end of the main terminal. Trains run 5 AM to 1 AM daily. Shuttle:Atlanta Link (404-524-3400) runs every 15 minutes from 6 AM to 11:30 PM. Taxi:Look for taxis outside the baggage claim area for the main terminal. The 20-minute trip to downtown will cost about $25 plus tax.
