The South's most cosmopolitan city, Atlanta comes alive after dark with something for every taste. Widely acclaimed as Atlanta's best place to hear the blues, Blind Willie's is a fixture in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood. You'll think you're in New Orleans in this small, smoky club named for local bluesman, Blind Willie McTell, but this is Atlanta's venue for the nation's biggest blues performers, from Junior Wells to Taj Mahal. If your tastes run more toward jazz, check out the Yin Yang Cafe, an up-and-coming nightclub that features a broad range of jazz stylings, from acoustic jam sessions to acid jazz.

Rock fans can take in their favorite recording artists in midtown Atlanta's Cotton Club. When it's not presenting national acts, this rock & roll institution features the best in local talent and three well-stocked bars. If you into a more eclectic mix of rock options, head over to the Little Five Points neighborhood and the Star Community Bar. This small honky-tonk, complete with Elvis shrine, features everything from surf music to rockabilly to poetry readings to the infamous New Orleans Klezmer Allstars. If the frenetic pace gets to you, take a break at the separate Little Vinyl Lounge, located downstairs.

For a more urbane evening, take a stroll to the Martini Club, a 1920s house converted into an elegant Art Deco lounge. Settle into one of its intimate rooms and enjoy its selection of 54 martinis, premium cigars, and live jazz piano. After something a little more continental? Dubbed the best piano bar in the city by Atlanta Magazine, Brasserie Au Bar offers the finest pianists around, playing in an atmosphere of French sophistication. For a caffeine-charged nightcap, try Cafe Intermezzo, a European-style coffee house open until 4 am on the weekends (3 am Sunday through Thursday).

For the best in Atlanta comedy, you'll have to head to the 'burbs. The Punchline in Sandy Springs is the Atlanta area's longest-running comedy venue, and books some of the best national headliners in the business. For home-grown humor, you can't do better than Laughing Matters, Atlanta's premiere improvisational troupe. They perform the first Friday of every month at Dave & Buster's in Marietta, an entertainment mecca in itself, sporting two bars, "just-for-fun" casino games, and a "Million Dollar Midway." Country and Western fans also find their niche in the suburbs at Two Steps West on Chamblee Tucker Road. Take a spin on the huge dance floor (they'll even give you a dance lesson), or try your luck on the mechanical bull.

Buckhead is the place to go for dance clubs. From '70s retro to the cutting edge of industrial and techno, you'll find it here. For the latest information on Atlanta's club scene, consult local and neighborhood publications like Creative Loafing
