Downtown Columbus follows a grid system established during the colonial era. Starting at the river in downtown, the first street parallel to the river is Bay Avenue, and the next parallel street is Front Avenue. Then come Broadway and 1st through 10th Avenues. Veterans Parkway (Highway 27) is a main thoroughfare that links up with Interstate 185. Parallel to Veterans Parkway is 2nd Avenue which can serve as an alternate route to the downtown area. When approaching Columbus from the East, watch for Highway 80, which will also take you downtown. Coming from the South, take Highway 27/280/520, called Victory Drive in Columbus. Victory Drive connects with Veterans Parkway as well. Rush hours begin at 8 AM and 5 pm. There are a limited number of downtown parking lots. Your best bet is the free street parking.
