Downtown, the Columbus Historic Riverfront Industrial District was born of Columbus's early growth as a center of heavy manufacturing. The district's 25 blocks originated with the city plan of 1828 and include historic homes and buildings such as the Columbus Ironworks, which at one time manufactured cannons for the Confederacy. Today, the massive walls of the former foundry harbor the city's modern convention center. At Heritage Park, stop by Heritage Corner for a tour of five of the district's historic homes. Among them are a log cabin, Edwardian townhouse, and Pemberton House, the restored Victorian home of the inventor of the Coca-Cola recipe. After a look at the city's past, step across the street to the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, which offers hands-on exhibits for the scientifically curious and a wide variety of shows in the Omnisphere Theater. A stroll along the Columbus Riverwalk on the banks of the Chattahoochee River will take you past a series of historical markers on the Chattahoochee Promenade.
Fascinating historical artifacts can be seen at the National Civil War Naval Museum, which houses the hulls of the Civil War gunboat Chattahoochee and the ironclad Jackson, salvaged after 100 years on the bottom of the Chattahoochee River. The Columbus Museum features American Indian relics from prehistoric times, American decorative arts, and American fine arts of the last 300 years. At Fort Benning, the story of the foot soldier from the time of the French and Indian War to the present is told through the vast collection of weapons, uniforms, and equipment preserved at the National Infantry Museum.
Among Columbus's many rich cultural offerings is the Springer Opera House, the State Theatre of Georgia, which has been restored to the grandeur of its Victorian roots. The Columbus Symphony performs at Bill Heard Theatre in the new RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, part of the South Commons Sports and Entertainment Complex. Here, sports fans will find a variety of events at several facilities: Columbus Civic Center, home of the Lions of the World Indoor Football League and the Cottonmouths of the South Professional Hockey League; Golden Park, home field of the Columbus Catfish, class A Tampa Bay Devil Rays affilate of the South Atlantic League; Memorial Stadium; and the South Commons Softball Complex.
