Established in the 1720s to protect British colonial interests, Darien is the seat of McIntosh County and a center for the shrimp industry. Deep sea fishing charters are available. At reconstructed Fort King George, the first English fort in modern Georgia and the southernmost English outpost in the New World in 1721, there are exhibits on Spanish and British influence in the area. South of Darien, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site is a former rice plantation that is now a wilderness area with a museum and an 1851 house. The museum has displays on the influence of African slaves in the creation of a thriving rice industry.
