The seat of Putnam County has been the hometown of two celebrated writers: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker and Joel Chandler Harris, creator of the beloved storyteller Uncle Remus. You'll find depictions of Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear and other characters at the Uncle Remus Museum. The museum is housed in slave cabins like those where Harris first heard similar stories as a boy. Eatonton is on the Antebellum Trail, running from Athens to Macon. The trail features towns with antebellum homes and attractions. At nearby Rock Eagle, you can view the huge effigy of an eagle lying atop an American Indian burial mound that is believed to be 6,000 years old. Outdoor recreation abounds at Lakes Oconee and Sinclair, where you may fish, camp, boat, and swim.
