Hiawasee, the seat of Towns County in the mountainous northeast corner of Georgia, was founded at the junction of two Cherokee Indian trails. This picturesque mountain community on the shores of Chatuge Lake comes alive with the sounds of old time music when the Fiddlers Convention comes to town in October as part of the 10-day Fall Celebration. The Georgia Mountain Fair, held every August, offers exhibits, music, and a carnival. You can visit the Fred Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens year-round at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. Nearby, Brasstown Bald rises to 4,784 feet, the highest peak in the state.
