Lumpkin was founded in 1830. It is the seat of Stewart County, an agricultural region where the peanut is of prime importance. On the town square, you can visit the Bedingfield Inn Museum, a stagecoach stop built in 1836, and Dr. Hatchett's Drugstore Museum, the town's apothecary from 1875 to 1950. Nearby, 32 frontier-era buildings have been relocated to Westville, a living-history village with costumed interpreters depicting the life of the 1850s. In Providence Canyon State Park, you can explore the heavily eroded, constantly changing and colorful canyons of "Georgia's Little Grand Canyon." Florence Marina State Park offers camping, boating, tennis, and an interpretive center.
