Macon's Cannonball House survived a Civil War attack when a cannonball bounced off its white columns and landed in the main hallway. Hay House, a finely crafted, 1855 Italian Renaissance mansion, is filled with antiques from around the world. Poet Sydney Clayton Lanier was born in Lanier Cottage. In addition to these homes, the Museum of Arts and Sciences, Mark Smith Planetarium, Grand Opera House, and Tubman African-American Museum provide a wide spectrum of history and culture. Other attractions include the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and Douglass Theatre.
