Rome, located at the confluence of the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers at head of the Coosa Valley, is the main cultural center for northwest Georgia. Built on seven hills like its ancient namesake, it has its own Capitoline Wolf at city hall, a gift from Italy's "Eternal City." You can visit Oak Hill, the former plantation home of local legend Martha Berry (1866-1942), who dedicated herself to the education of mountain children. The Martha Berry Museum depicts her life and work which evolved from teaching in a one-room schoolhouse to the creation of Berry College, the world's largest college campus. You can also visit the Chieftains Museum, the mansion and log cabin of Major Ridge, a leader of the Cherokee who attempted to adapt to European culture while maintaining his Indian heritage. The Rome Area History Museum contains displays on the Civil War and local figures including Ellen Axson Wilson, a native of Rome and the wife of President Woodrow Wilson. Don't miss the Eubanko Museum & Gallery (on the Shorter College campus), devoted to celebrating the Eubanko family's world travels, explorations, and safaris.
