The village is situated at the southern end of St. Simons Island, the largest of Georgia's Golden Isles. Here, you'll find the Maritime Center and the nearby lighthouse which, at the top of its 129 steps, gives an excellent view of the surrounding land and sea. Dotted with resorts, motels, and the remains of old plantations, the island has a long and fascinating colonial history. You can visit Fort Frederica National Monument, where in 1736, James Oglethorpe constructed fortifications to ward off attack by the Spanish. On the island, a number of live oak trees have been carved with faces to commemorate sailors lost at sea. Called "Tree Spirits," the carvings also pay homage to the island shipbuilding history; St. Simons oak was used to build ships, including the USS Constitution0 . The oak, it is said, is one reason she is called "Old Ironsides." From St. Simons Island you can take the causeway to Sea Island, a year-round resort that has become popular with several recent presidents, or take the ferry to Little St. Simons Island, a private island with limited visitor facilities.
