Savannah is situated on the Savannah River, approximately 240 miles southeast of Atlanta. The major east-west highway is Interstate 16, which leads into the heart of the city. The major north-south route is Interstate 516, which cuts through the western third of Savannah. Savannah's founder, James Oglethorpe, laid out the city in 24 squares, 22 of which still exist, forming the Savannah Historic District. The city's streets follow the orderly pattern of these squares. Savannah is a "walking city," which means that the citizens of Savannah and visitors to the city enjoy the beauty of Savannah's large Historic District as they go on foot from place to place, be it for business or pleasure. If you plan to drive in Savannah, parking garages, parking lots, and metered street parking are available. Once you park your car you will be tempted to walk the rest of the way.
