This railroading and manufacturing town serves as the northern gateway to the mysterious and beautiful Okefenokee Swamp, a wilderness area covering more than 600 square miles. From Waycross, you can enter the swamp at Okefenokee Swamp Park, where you'll find exhibits on the swamp's creation and ecosystem as well as nature trails and wildlife viewing areas. Guided boat tours are also available. You can also visit the swamp at Obediah's Okefenok, a 19th-century homestead featuring wildlife exhibits and a 1,100 foot boardwalk. The Okefenokee Heritage Center has historical displays, a restored farmhouse from the 1840s, old locomotives and train cars, an art gallery, and a room dedicated to the work of Walt Kelly, creator of the enduring comic strip, "Pogo." Also of interest, the Southern Forest World Museum's exhibits on the logging industry include walk-in and talking trees.
