You will probably not need a car unless you plan to see other portions of the island of Oahu. Distances in the downtown Honolulu business district and along the beaches of Waikiki are short and buses and taxis are plentiful.

Bus: Oahu Transit Service operates The Bus. All rides, no matter how far, cost $2 for adults, $1 for youth. Transfers to another route are free. Ask the driver for a transfer when boarding. Monthly passes cost $40 ($20 for students). (808-848-5555) Taxi: Cabs can usually be found at hotels and can sometimes be hailed. Rates start at $1.50 and cost $2.50 for mile. Some larger companies are Charley's (808-531-1333) and SIDA (808-836-0011).

Honolulu International Airport (HNL)
Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is located nine miles west of the beaches at Waikiki and is the hub for transpacific and inter-island airlines. (808-836-6411) Transportation from the airport to downtown: Bus: Buses 19 and 20 leave about every 30 minutes from 5 AM until 11:30 PM. Tickets are $2. The trip to the business district takes about 30 minutes; 1 hour to hotels in Waikiki. Baggage must fit under seats or be held in your lap. (808-848-5555) Shuttle: Airport Express charges $8 for atrip to Waikiki. (808-949-5249) Taxi: Cabs can be found at the curb on the first level. Expect to pay $15 to $20 for a 15-minute ride to downtown, $25 to $35 to Waikiki.
