Lying in the rain shadow of the island's volcanos, the Kona district -- Hawaii's "Gold Coast" -- is known for its sunshine, innumerable beaches, and resorts both large and small. The waters offshore are acclaimed for their sportfishing, especially for prize marlin. Macadamia nuts and Kona coffee, the only coffee produced commercially in the United States, are grown here. In Kailua-Kona, be sure to visit Mokuaikaua Church, the village's chief landmark. It was built of lava stone by Congregationalist missionaries in 1836. You can also tour Hulihee Palace, the summer home of Hawaii's kings and queens. Built in the style of an English manor house in 1838, the palace is filled with the treasures of Hawaiian royalty. Ahuena Heiau is an important historical site from the days of King Kamahameha; it's near Kamakahonu Beach, a popular swimming area right in downtown Kailua. To the south, White Sands Beach County Park (or Magic Sands Beach) is popular for swimming when the sand is there (the sand disappears when storms come in) and for whale-watching (November through April/May) when it isn't.
