Hawaii's old royal capital, this city was a major whaling port in the 1800s. Today, tourism and agriculture are major activities. Sight-seeing cruises, glass-bottom boat trips, and fishing trips are all popular at the bustling waterfront. Visit the Carthaginian II Floating Museum, a 120-foot whaling vessel with exhibits on whales and whaling. A huge banyan tree marks the center of town; planted in 1873, it covers almost an acre. A few miles north is Kaanapali, a beachfront resort complex with golf, tennis, beach facilities, restaurants, and nightclubs. Nearby is Whalers Village, a dining-shopping complex with a museum that recalls Maui's whaling days. Farther north is Kapalua, another major resort area. The Lahaina-Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad is a replica of a narrow-gauge, 1890s sugarcane railroad offering a half-hour ride between Lahaina and Puukolii (near Kaanapali).
