Just four miles from downtown Honolulu, this renowned resort combines beautiful beaches, fine shops and hotels, and sophisticated entertainment. The center of much activity is the busy strip along Kalakaua Avenue, lined with high-rise hotels along Waikiki Beach. King's Village is an interesting complex of shops, restaurants, and a museum where you can enjoy a colorful changing-of-the-guard and free Hawaiian entertainment. The International Market Place offers restaurants, nightclubs, and open-front shops where Polynesian artisans demonstrate their crafts.
Queen Kapiolani Park, at the south end of the beach, is a 500-acre area with many attractions, including a zoo with a fine collection of tropical birds; an aquarium with many unusual species; the Waikiki Shell, scene of outdoor concerts; tennis courts; picnic areas; and much more.
Adjacent to the park is the Diamond Head State Monument, the island's most famous landmark. According to legend, this extinct volcano was the home of Pele, the fire goddess. You can take a half-mile hike to the rim of the crater for a spectacular overview of Waikiki and Honolulu.
