The oldest town in the state, Cahokia was founded by French missionaries from Quebec in 1699. The Cahokia Courthouse, built as a home in 1737 by Jean Baptiste Saucier, became a courthouse and center of government for the entire Old Northwest Territory in 1793, a function it held for twenty years. After being relocated several times, the pioneer French-style building was restored to its original site in 1939. The nearby visitors center has displays on French influence in the settlement of the West. You can also visit the Old Church of the Holy Family (1799), Cahokia Cemetery, and Jarrot Mansion (1810).Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, where a large center of the Mississippian culture flourished from the years 900 to 1500, is about 20 miles northeast, near Collinsville.
