Ringed by a defensive wall of levees, Cairo (pronounced KAY-row) occupies the narrow peninsula where the Ohio River meets the Mississippi. At the very tip, Fort Defiance State Park offers a vantage point to watch the confluence of these two mighty commercial lifelines and their busy water-borne traffic. In town, Magnolia Manor, built in 1869 as a merchant prince's mansion, contains much of its original furnishings. At the U.S. Custom House Museum, you'll find historic displays including Indian artifacts and a desk used by General Grant when he made Cairo his headquarters during the Civil War.To the north, gum, cypress, and cottonwood trees make Horshoe Lake State Conservation Area seem like parts of the Deep South. The 10,200-acre site, which plays host to thousands of migrating waterfowl, offers camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, and hunting.
