Surrounded by Shawnee National Forest's rugged beauty and many lakes, Carbondale is the home of Southern Illinois University. On campus, you can attend performances at beautiful Shryock Auditorium, noted for its fine acoustics. At the University Museum, you'll find touring exhibitions and changing shows from the university's large collections of fine and decorative arts, geological specimens, and historic, anthropological, and archaeological artifacts.
East of town, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge provides observation towers for wildlife viewing. Giant City State Park offers an equestrian center, as well as camping, hiking, boating, and fishing. Fishing is also popular at Little Grassy and Devil's Kitchen lakes. Several nearby wineries offer tours and tastings.
