This small rural community is the county seat of Hancock County. On June 27, 1844, a mob broke into the Old Carthage Jail and murdered Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, and his brother, Hyrum, who were being held here on charges of treason. You can visit the jail and visitor center where tours include an 18-minute presentation on the life of Smith. Also of interest, the Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum displays the life-long collection of natural history and local historical artifacts assembled by Dr. Alice Kibbe, a professor at Carthage College. Exhibits include Civil War memorabilia from Hancock County soldiers, Indian artifacts, 19th-century clothing, toys, and furniture, geodes, and local flora and fauna.
