Originally the site of John Dixon's ferry crossing, this town on the Rock River became the seat of Lee County shortly after the county was created in 1839. Fort Dixon, built here during the Black Hawk War in 1832, saw many future notables doing service: Abraham Lincoln, Zachary Taylor, Jefferson Davis, and Winfield Scott among others. A statue depicting Lincoln as a young soldier marks the site of the fort. Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the United States, was born in nearby Tampico and grew up in Dixon. You can visit his boyhood home which has been restored to its appearance during the Reagan's residency, 1920-1923.
