Founded in 1835 by William "Tutty" Baker, whose trading post became legendary for its free meals and free ferry rides, this northern Illinois town was the sight of the crucial second debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Life-sized statues of the famous speakers mark the site in Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square. A second statue of "Lincoln the Debater" stands in Taylor Park.

The 1857 Taylor Mansion houses the Stephenson County Historical Museum and its 19th-century furnishings. The site also boasts a one-room schoolhouse, a farm and industrial museum, an 1840s log cabin, and an arboretum. The Silver Creek and Stephenson Railroad offers four-mile tours on a 1912 steam locomotive with antique cabooses and passenger car. You can also visit the Freeport Arts Center and the Silvercreek Museum.

In nearby Cedarville, the Historical Museum offers displays on the life of humanitarian Jane Addams, winner of the Noble Peace Prize, who was born and raised here and who is buried nearby.
