Galesburg and Knox College were founded in the same year, 1836, by Presbyterian minister George Washington Gale. The college's "Old Main," a national historic landmark, is the only remaining building where one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 took place. The cottage where poet Carl Sandburg was born is open for visitors. A nearby museum offers displays on his life and work. You can also visit the Galesburg Railroad Museum, which offers a restored 1921 Pullman parlor car, a locomotive and caboose from the 1930s, and other cars and equipment. Interesting buildings in town include the wildly eclectic Orpheum Theatre, a vaudville house constructed in 1916, and the Central Congregational Church built in 1898.
