This tiny village occupying a sharp bend in the Rock River began as a mill town in 1833. In 1837, John Deere made the first practical steel plow here. By 1843, he and a partner had opened the state's first steel plow factory; it would evolve into one of the world's largest manufacturers of agricultural machinery. The John Deere Historic Site includes his homestead, gardens, and a working restoration of his blacksmith shop. Exhibits demonstrate prairie life during the pioneer period and the development of Deere's company. A two-acre area of natural prairie grass and wildflowers surrounds the site.
