This small city on the Kankakee River is the seat of Kankakee County, a primarily agricultural region. More than 150,000 colorful gladiolas are harvested here from early summer to fall. You can see Indian artifacts, molds of sculptures by George Grey Barnard, Civil War relics, and local history displays at the Kankakee County Historical Society Art Museum. Victorian-era homes grace the Riverview Historic District, while two early examples of Prairie-style homes by Frank Lloyd Wright can be seen on South Harrison Avenue. Downtown Kankakee is well known for its large antique mall.Kankakee River State Park offers fishing, canoeing, nature programs, and camping. Boating is popular on the river above the Kankakee dam.
