Situated along the I & M Canal National Heritage Corridor (a 90-mile linear park extending from Chicago to Peru), the village of Lockport is one of the United States' best-preserved canal towns. Founded with the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1836, the town boasts a fine historic district where both old and modern locks can be seen. You can visit the Illinois and Michigan Canal Museum housed in the canal commissioners house of 1837. The Pioneer Settlement includes a log cabin, jail, and various 19th-century shops. In the Gaylord Building (1838), you'll find the visitors center and the Lockport Gallery, a branch of the state museum.
