The seat of Piatt County grew to prominence with the coming of two rail lines in the late 19th century. The Monticello Railway Museum in the restored Illinois Central depot recalls those days with historic rail cars and a 50-minute journey on a vintage train. More railroading items can be found at the Rayville Museum. The Red House Museum features Civil War memorabilia plus Indian and pioneer artifacts.West of the town, you can explore the woodlands and formal gardens of Robert Allerton Park, where museum-quality bronze sculptures grace secluded forest glens. The Bryant Cottage Historic Site, where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas are thought to have formalized plans for their historic debate, is in nearby Bement.
