Restored homes and businesses recall Nauvoo's early days when it was the center of the Mormon religion. Among the historic buildings, you'll find the home of Joseph Smith who brought his followers here in 1839 and who was killed in nearby Carthage in 1844. You can also visit the restored home of Brigham Young who led the Mormons to Utah two years after Smith's death. In addition to the dozens of restored buildings, you'll find craft and lifestyle demonstrations. You can wander through verdant lanes, then taste the locally made blue cheese and wine. The lake at Nauvoo State Park offers boating and fishing opportunities and a museum on the city's history. The drive from Nauvoo to Hamilton along the Great River Road is one of Illinois' prettiest.
