This suburb of Chicago, famous for many homes and buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, was the home of the famed architect for more than 20 years while he developed his distinctive Prairie style. The Ernest Hemingway Museum and Birthplace honors the noted author and also displays Hemingway memorabilia. Other famous Oak Parkers were Edgar Rice Burroughs, author; Carl Rogers, psychologist; Dorothy Thompson, journalist; and Charles MacArthur, playwright. Pleasant Home Mansion, designed by George W. Maher, houses the local historical society.

The Oak Park Visitor Center provides information, guidebooks, and guided tours of the Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie School of Architecture National Historic District. This is the place to obtain recorded walking tours and admission tickets to the Unity Temple, Wright's first concrete structure, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, where he tested his new design ideas by remodeling the interior on the average of once every 18 months.
