Located on Interstate Highways 90 and 39 and US Highway 20, Rockford, the third-largest city in Illinois, is definitely a driving city. The streets are arranged around the winding Rock River, and those designated as east and west fall on either side of Main Street, which is just one block west of the river. State Street is the dividing line for streets designated north or south.

Bus: Rockford Mass Transit buses cover 17 routes and operate from 5:15 am to 11:15 pm Monday through Friday. Some routes have reduced service on weekends and no night service is offered on Saturdays. During peak hours, buses arrive at stops every thirty minutes; during off hours, buses arrive every hour or so, although some routes maintain half-hour schedules throughout the day. Fares are $1 with transfers free. Taxi: You'll find only two cab stands -- at the Greater Rockford Airport and near the downtown bus station --and passengers cannot hail cabs in the streets. It's best to call for a pick-up: Spree-Dee (815-963-3322). Fares include $1.80 basic charge, plus $1.80 per mile. Some hotels provide limited guest shuttle service.

Just over 60 minutes away by car, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) handles most of Rockford's visitors. The Greater Rockford Airport (RFD) offers commuter service to Chicago and several other Midwest cities. Transportation from Chicago O'Hare to downtown Rockford: Shuttle service between O'Hare and Rockford is provided by Van Galder Bus (800-747-0994) at $15 each way. Departures from Rockford begin at 3:30 AM and end at 7 PM, and departures from O'Hare begin at 6:30 AM and end at 11 PM. Transportation from the Greater Rockford Airport to downtown Rockford: Rockford Mass Transit buses serve the airport 13 times daily Monday through Friday for a $1 fare. Taxis are also available; a ride downtown will cost about $12.
