The oldest part of the Quad Cities metro area, Rock Island was the site of the first railroad to reach the Mississippi River in 1854. The city grew through the aid of the railroad that bears its name, the legendary Rock Island Line. On Arsenal Island, you'll find a number of intriguing places to visit. The island has been the site of the United States' largest ammunition and firearm factory since the time of the Civil War. The Arsenal Museum has thousands of firearms on display. Nearby is a Confederate cemetery, a national cemetery, and the Col. Davenport House (1833), believed to be the oldest house in the Quad Cities. Elsewhere on the island, you can visit the Mississippi River Center to view working locks and river traffic closeup at Lock and Dam No. 15. The city is also home to the Black Hawk State Historic Site, located where Sauk Indians once had a village along the Rock River. The site includes the Hauberg Indian Museum, as well as trails along the bluffs above the river.
