Founded in 1852 by Swiss Mennonites, this tiny village's Alpine background is reflected in much of its quaint architecture. You can visit the Swiss Heritage Village and Museum -- 11 restored buildings including a school, cider press, and the oldest Mennonite church in the U.S. The surrounding area is ripe with Amish farms, where horse-drawn buggies and the old "plain ways" are the rule. Amishville USA offers buggy rides and tours of a restored Amish farmhouse and grist mill.
In nearby Geneva, you can visit the Limberlost State Historic Site, the former home of author and naturalist Gene Stratton Porter.
