Bloomington, the seat of Monroe County, is the home of Indiana University, founded in 1820 and presently serving some 35,000 students. Among the many highlights of the 870-acre campus are the Thomas Hart Benton murals found in Woodburn Hall and the I.U. Auditorium, the I.U. Art Museum which has a permanent collection of 30,000 works representing artists from around the world, the Lilly Library of Rare Books and Manuscripts which has Gutenberg Bibles and Shakespeare First Folios, and the Mathers Museum of World Cultures with its displays of archaeology and anthropology. Off campus attractions include the Monroe County Historical Society Museum, tours of the Butler and Oliver wineries, and the wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities available at Monroe Lake, the largest lake in the state, and the Hoosier National Forest.
