This Ohio River port is the commercial and cultural hub of southwest Indiana and nearby areas of Illinois and Kentucky. The Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science features hands-on exhibits, as well as traditional displays of art, anthropology, and technology. The museum complex includes the Koch Planetarium and a recreated Midwest village, Rivertown USA. You can see animals of the endangered rainforest, the butterfly house, and other creatures at the imaginative Mesker Park & Botanic Garden Zoo. The Reitz Home Museum (1871) offers ornate interior decoration and period furnishings.
To the southeast, you'll find Angel Mounds State Historic Site, the site of an ancient community of the Mississippian civilization. The site includes a museum with Indian artifacts unearthed here, a reproduction of the village, and nature trails.
