If you want distinctive local atmosphere, you'll find it in several widely scattered central-city nightspots. There is no entertainment district as such, although the Marketplace of Canterbury, a strip mall on the north side with a faux-medieval motif, attracts the biggest crowds with its numerous clubs and large concert venue.

Canterbury's largest nightspot, Piere's, jumps to the beat of five different clubs -- including a karaoke bar, sports bar, country music bar, and high-energy dance club -- all under one roof. In the center of it all, a 60,000-square-foot music arena features upwards of 65 national acts each year, as well as plenty of local and regional talent in all musical genres. Snickerz Comedy Bar, also at Canterbury, operates Thursday through Saturday and features national talent, a full bar, and a pub food menu. On Thursday nights, you may catch the regular taping of a local television show there.

Columbia Street West, on the city's historic canal landing, features regional bands of various musical genres several nights a week, a full-service food and bar menu, and an interesting atmosphere that includes an electric train running nonstop around the perimeter of the building's well-preserved 19th-century hammered tin ceiling. For more sedate dining in an interesting atmosphere, you might try Henry's, a popular spot with the artsy crowd that features one of the most beautiful carved wooden bars in the city as well as a newly expanded menu. Another popular downtown spot, the Park Place Grille overlooks a park and sculpture garden and features a full bar and American menu. Japanese exhibition cooking is offered at Takaoka of Japan, just upstairs from a steakhouse whose building it shares on the banks of one of the three downtown rivers. For fresh seafood in a quaint atmosphere, try the Oyster Bar, just south of downtown.
