First settled with the construction of Fort Finney in 1786, this historic river town was named for President Thomas Jefferson who later contributed a checkerboard town plan for the growing city that bore his name. Jeffersonville's main industry in the 19th century was steamboat building; the town still lays claim to the title of the largest inland boat building center in the U.S. You can visit the Howard Steamboat Museum and see tools and models of the ships built at the Howard Ship Yards from 1834 to 1941. In nearby Clarksville, you'll find the Falls of the Ohio State Park where you can explore fossil beds, walk the nature trails, and see Native American artifacts and other exhibits in the interpretative center.
