Fine antebellum mansions, noble 19th-century commercial buildings, and charming Hanover College stand as reminders of Madison's importance as an Ohio River port in the late 1800s. The town's numerous historic structures include Dr. William Hutchings Office, a remarkably well-preserved medical facility from the turn of the 20th century, and the home of banker James F.D. Lanier, a Greek Revival mansion (1844) containing original furnishings. You can also visit the Shrewsbury-Windle House (ca.1849), Masonic Schofield House (ca. 1816), and the Sullivan Home. The Madison Railroad Station (1895) houses exhibits from the Jefferson County Historical Society. For outdoor splendors, Clifty Falls State Park offers several waterfalls and nature trails through the bouldered Clifty Canyon State Nature Preserve.
