Today part of the greater Louisville, Kentucky, metropolitan area, New Albany was founded in 1813 by three brothers from New York who named the town after the capital of their home state. With shipbuilding as the town's economic mainstay, New Albany's yards produced packet boats and such famed craft as the steamboat Robert E. Lee. Along Mansion Row, you can see a wide variety of 19th-century architectural styles, including the Culbertson Mansion (1869), a Second Empire-style home with elegant interior detail and a remarkable three-story cantilevered staircase. The Floyd County Museum has displays on the pioneer and steamboat eras, the Civil War, and Ohio River life.
