New Harmony was established in 1814 by George Rapp and The Harmonie Society; the group lived here communally and industriously. In 1824 they sold the town to Scottish industrialist and social reformer Robert Owen to create a community of equality for international scholars, scientists, and educators. Utopia was not realized, but the town continued as an intellectual and cultural center. Today New Harmony offers theater, music, elaborate gardens, outdoor sculptures, a boxwood maze, a modern roofless church, and historic tours of the old Harmonist buildings. The Vistors Center and Historic New Harmony Museum Shop are open 9:30 AM to 5 PM daily from mid-March through December.
