Old Vincennes dates from a fort founded in 1732 by Francois Marie Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes. The city became the capital of the old Northwest Territory, and later the capital of the Indiana Territory. George Rogers Clark National Historical Park tells the story of Clark's exploits in 1779 when he and his men captured Vincennes to win the Northwest for the rebelling colonies. The campus of Vincennes University includes the original frame capitol of the Indiana Territory. Nearby is Grouseland, the mansion of William Henry Harrison, ninth U.S. president, when he was governor of Indiana Territory. Among other Vincennes sights are the Old Cathedral Complex (1826), Sugar Loaf Indian Mound, and the old French House and Indian Museum (1806).
