The Shaker's western-most community existed here from 1807 to 1922. The South Union Centre House, built in 1824, houses the Shaker Museum at South Union. The simplicity of the Shaker lifestyle is depicted in hundreds of exhibits. The elegantly simple architecture includes such features as double doors and double staircases which demonstrate the Shakers belief in the separation of the sexes.
Nearby, you can see the Shaker Tavern (now a B&B) constructed in 1869 to serve railway passengers. Built in a much more refined style with a two-story columned facade and an elaborate staircase, it was leased by the Shakers to outside interests and provided a steady income for more than 30 years. At the Shaker Museum, letters are still canceled by hand, like they were at the original post office building.
